I love the absolute simplicity of knitting in its most basic form. With just two sticks and a length of continuous fibre a myriad of things can be created, both useful and beautiful. Or crochet, perhaps even simpler, just a hook. Easy enough to whittle from a found piece of drift wood or fallen branch, and coupled with a length of rope, vine, knotted together lengths of plant, fabric, plastic bags, or any other plentiful washed up material that litters the beaches and waterways, and you can make a net to catch fish or snare a bird or animal, create clothing to protect and nurture, and beyond that all manner of things more or less essential for survival. Granted, you may also need to make fire, have access to fresh water, hone your foraging skills (etc!), but I’ve always said that it’s a post-apocalyptic skill and if only we could teach Bear Grylls to crochet, they’d all get off that island in no time!
