The last few days of the calendar year always feel a little frustrating to me, a pause right in the middle of proceedings, not unexpected exactly, but disruptive none the less – or perhaps a commercial break feels a more appropriate metaphor! There’s a lot to distract – travel plans, family dynamics, food shopping, peeling, mixing, wrapping and so much glitter…And it can sometimes feel like a low point creatively, with projects put on hold until the new year, a general mince pie fuelled lethargy and a strange Ground Hog Day sensation of having done this all before. Don’t get me wrong, I am absolutely here for the gift giving, paper-hat adorned loved ones, bedecked tables, pyjama days and cosy evenings watching repeats of The Vicar of Dibley – but midway through about day two and I’m ready to wipe down the table, package up the recycling and think about getting stuff done. The collective wrapping up and battening down the hatches (this year in the UK very literally against Storm Gerrit!!) is all well and good, but if everyone has their feet up on the sofa then the fun of it is somehow lost on me and I quickly stagnate. I would always rather a clandestine mid-week jolly than a national bank holiday day outing.
